Credit Suisse: 99 Bedford Street
Boston, Massachusetts
Design Architect: Rogers Partners Architects
Square Footage: 6120 square feet
Construction Cost: $3,000,000
Dates: 2020-2022
Rogers Partners was asked to do a full redesign and renovation of the ground floor and basement of a historic building near the Boston waterfront – with the goal of adding value to a real-estate holding of Credit Suisse. In addition to providing an entirely new Lobby, the project included an entirely new exterior Entrance, and a Fitness Center with Locker-rooms and showers.
On the exterior, we relocated the entrance from the corner of Lincoln and Bedford, to the North façade on Bedford Street. This allowed for the corner to be leased as a retail space, and for the Lobby to be a simpler and better proportioned space. We designed a modern canopy consisting of painted steel panels. We transformed an under-utilized interior skylit Atrium into a dynamic place in which to meet for lunch by inserting amphitheater-like stepped seating between the lobby and the lower-level atrium, and also by installing a fiber-optic cable lighting feature suspended from the top of the south wall of the Atrium.
A new fitness center, with borrowed natural light and with locker-rooms and showers was inserted into an under-utilized space on the west side of the Atrium. The chevron patterns of the ornamental painted steel reference the cast-iron guardrails of the 19th-century exterior. The fiber-optic cable references the rigging of 18th and 19th century clipper ships, which once docked nearby on the waterfront.
